Do you just rub the bacon grease on them and where exactly? My dark bay TB hides inside and won't go out because of how bad the bugs are right now. I would think the bacon smell would attract flies but I'm willing to try anything that might work.
And has anyone used the fly boots?

I apply it the same way one would SWAT.

Chest and girth, and croup. No need to cake it on as I imagine is the typical image.

Feel free to take your bacon grease outside, and leave it. Dollars to donoughts, it won't have flys on it. Sounds crazy, but.......

Works for us. And saves us some serious $$$

My black horse always has a lot of flies on him but my mule, that's a sorrel, doesn't have as many flies. So I just spray Bronco fly spray and it works pretty good! :)

OK, so I got up early, cooked 1/2 lb of bacon and was really getting excited to help Sage (our palomino). We went to our land where we have our horses, I started working with our 3 week old colt and my husband went right to Sage. We had a small breakdown in communication because I see Sage spook away from him in the round pen and she won't go near him!! He let her smell it first.... She smells everything else, I forgot to tell him horses may not care for the smell...lol. She was not having any part of it!! So we will try again after this crazy weather is gone. As of right now we can't even get to our horses!! It is flooding so bad the bridges are either closed or washed out.
(FYI-Sage is 11 years old and had her first human contact 6 weeks ago, she is NOT halter broke)

I just posted in another thread about permethrin, the active ingredient in lots of fly sprays. I agree, they don't work. They aren't strong enough (about 0.3% permethrin) so I bought a bottle of really strong permethrin and mix my own fly spray at least 4X stronger than that. Permethrin is not toxic to mammals except cats and it is toxic to fish. I bought a bottle of 37% permethrin and diluted it with water for a spray and with mineral oil for the spot on treatment. I use both at once and rub the oil mix on the belly and face. Saved a bunch of money given the cost of fly sprays and Equispot type products. You can put it into a garden sprayer and use it on your horses. You can research it on the web and figure out how you want to mix it. It came with a little booklet of instructions for mixing but I made mine a lot stronger. Here is a link to the product I bought which is 32 oz and will last a very long time:
Amazon.com: 36.8% Permethrin SFR Multi Use Pest Control Insecticide / Termiticide 32 ounce Bottle ~~ Same 36.8% Permethrin as Dragnet and Tengard ~ Kill Aphids, Japanese beetles, bagworms, caterpillars, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, scorpions, wasps, tic
