The hardest part with her, is she is still growing, and I would like to get a blanket that will fit her for a few years, at least until she matures.
She'll continue growing til she's 5 or 6 years old. My youngsters grow through several blankets, from weanling to 60 inches in the first year, from 60 inches to 66 or 68 by 2 years old. That's for my Arabs. My Quarter Horse went from a 72 as a yearling to a 78 as a 2 year old and he's still growing. My full grown mare wears an 84 and might could go an 86.... But she's a HEFFAH!
I'd try to get the horse either into a pen or stall and if you don't have help, what I do is go from center chest as far as I can reach, then use a finger to "pin" the tape at the reach point and make a mental note of where you are, like 40". Then I move back and put my hand that was holding the chest end on the 40" mark and hold it while I stretch my other hand back to the tail. I pinch the tape at the tail and bring it around and read it, it's usually fairly accurate, within an inch anyhow. Obviously, to have at least one other person makes everybody's life a whole lot easier!
