Bump on ankle. Splint? pic

Farrier was just out and we found a bump on my 11 year old paint's ankle. Not sure how I didn't notice it, because I can't help seeing it now! He's not being ridden at this time, but I haven't seen any signs of unsoundness in the pasture. Not lame in hand today. The lump is hard. No heat, touching it doesn't bother him.
It wasn't there when the farrier was out 5 weeks ago (he came a week early because our other horse is going to the fair next week), and the vet was out for yearly physicals the last week of July, so it wasn't there then either. Could it be a splint? What exactly is a splint?

It won't let me paste the url so that I can post directly to this page, but here is the link to the pic

Hmm.. i was going to say a windpuff cause my horse has them right where that is on both his hind feet, but his are soft. maybe he just bumped his ankle. My horse has all sorts of crazy things pop up and they just go away.

No it isn't a splint. Splints are bumps that appear along the inside of the cannon bone between the fetlock and the knee. It is usually closer to the knee. From the pictures I would guess that he probably bumped it on something and caused a bit of swelling. It is possible that it is a windpuff too. I had to search to find out exactly what those were and this site had some good info.
