Can I jump my horse?

Hello!
I'm Jessica, I'm new... Madison's my horse.
I was wondering if anybody here had ever jumped a horse with a torn cruciate ligament. He tore it back when he was 12 and he's 19 now. He's sound on it besides from some arthritis that he works out of after some walking and trotting. Now he's pretty much a giant dog. I walk, trot, and canter 1 or 2 times a week but it's killing me not to jump! I just want to do some small stuff, maybe a foot or so but the last thing I want to do is hurt him, he's taken care of me for the last 12 years. I jumped him over a small log on a trail ride and he still loves it! Does anybody know if this is ok?

Personally I wouldnt know, BUT I would say that if you already jumped him and he showed no signs of pain or discomfort, then you should be ok. Granted that you only jump him lightly and every now and again. Aslong as he is happy and not in any pain im sure you will be ok. But don't take my word for it, im not a vet

That's really a question for your vet. He could be just fine, but you could be setting yourselves up for a bad fall or an further injury for him. I've had dogs with torn cruciates and you are supposed to be very careful with their exercise and whatnot. Not sure if it's the same with horses.

Cool, thanks! I was never too worried about it after it scarred up until I started vet school and learned what a cruciate ligament was... all my teachers are vets, I don't know why I haven't asked one of them. I guess you guys are just easier to talk to :)

I know, there's been a couple of times this semester where I've learned something that's made me look twice at what I'm doing. Sometimes it was ok and others not so much. I hope you figure it out!

Where are you going to vet school? I was considering going, but it's not in the cards right now.

Oh I know! Thanks, i'm sure I will! I go to iowa state. Its great besides lots of work and lots of debt....

LOL, the debt really got me. And I really need some time off school...
