Unhappy Can Not Gain Weight

I have a 16 year old Arabian Gelding, I have had him for 3 years now and when I first got him he was way over weight and he got a tooth issue which I had his teeth floated and had a tooth pulled. He gained weight beautifully through that winter (2011) and then in the spring he dropped it all off again! We then moved him and my other two horses to a more secluded place where he was grained every day (sweet feed from Runnings) he got a scoop a day and he still wasn't gaining much weight. He isn't pushy at all in his pasture he's at now (around 8 in the pasture) and I can still see his ribs and his top line is okay but not the best. He is still on grain but I don't know if its cause he's not getting good hay (since all the other horses push him away and he has to eat off the ground) We are going to try and move him and the other two out as quick as possible but I just wanted to know if I should be giving him more grain/better quality grain or anything to help him put on some more weight. He is ridden about once or twice a week at the moment.

Seclude him during feeding time and give him good quality alfalfa, puts weight on just about any horse but don't give him to much, especially to soon. Since he doesnt sound particularily skinny is shouldn't take very much, maybe 2 or 3 good sized flakes spread out over a day (4 inches thick from a normal 70-100lb bale). Take him off the sweet feed and replace it with either a well balanced grain or senior feed. Sweet feed as not nutritional value. Off course, mix all this into his diet gradually.
