My Thoroughbred is a rather hard keeper. He has not had any success with a good, solid weight until recently. This is his diet maintenance:

Daily Diet
  • free choice hay (big factor. the horse should be able to graze or "munch")
  • 1 1/2 soy sweet feed (not sure what the name is. my barn owner gets it custom made. any good, solid feed will do. high in fat/protein)
  • 3/4 beet pulp
  • 2 scoops (comes in container) of Fat Cat supplement
  • 1 scoop (same as fat cat scoop) salt
  • Fluid Flex (my horse is older & has some joint problems, not sure if your horse is young/old or whatever, but this supplement has done a lot)
Maintenance

  • teeth done once a year, have vet check over when she visits for spring shots
  • alternated dewormers every two months, power pack for spring
try to be constant with things! regularity is important

there's a lot that can be going on here.
depending on age, I'd start with a probiotics supp, coupled with fat cat (something i've had great success with in the past). however supplements only help the horse make use of the feed they have so quality feed is key. to start, i'm a fan of Triple Crown and Blue Seal. look for fat content - higher is better to put on weight - and make sure that it's pelleted and/or low starch. too much starch and carbs will be burned off and have the opposite effect. in addition i also use a stabilized rice bran pellet - high in fat w/o sugars and does a great job of putting on weight w/o fillers (like beet pulp).

good luck!

I haven't read the other replies, so sorry if this was answered =} What breed is your horse? What is the weather like where you are?

To add onto what CJ82sky said, besides all that other stuff I'm feeding, my horse is on Blue Seal Performance LS. It's high in fat and fiber, and low starch. It's fairly new to the market, but becoming popular fast.

My horse is a Saddlebred and we have moderate temperatures. Usually the summer gets to be about 80 with a low of 40 and winters get cold, usually a high of 35 and a low of -10 degrees Fahrenheit.

He's only 10, Here's a picture not long after we got him. Keep in mind that in this picture it is winter. Bad quality photo sorry.

Here's one of him now, best photo I could get of him.

i know others have said it but free choice hay- or can you give him more then you are giving him now?

also i LOVE Strategy- it helps with weight without the energy or making them hot...

let us know how he does...
