chewing!!!

My horse will chew on wood all the time. NOT crib. He dosent seem to mind it when I put "chew stop" on the wood. He just keeps on. I tried tabasco and lemon juice, but no luck. I now have a muzzel on him but he hates it. Any suggestions???? Help.

Put hot wire on the top of the fence, he'll get shocked a couple times and then he'll quit, if you don't know what hot wire is it should be at ur local lowes or home depot.

I had a problem with my girls eatting the bark off of my trees. I just wrapped everything with chicken wire that I don't want them to chew on.

Our horses do the same thing. What we do is supply them with wood they are allowed to chew on I.e. Some old logs and make the fence posts harder to get to and less appealing by bad tasting stuff and chicken wire. I find its way better than trying to get them to stop altogether.

Have you ruled out any medical or dental problems that may be causing this? If so, We have always used plain old Ivory Bar Soap. Just take a bar right out of the package and rub where ever he is chewing and they really seem to not like the taste of it. We used this for years and years with our race horse's who were stalled and just bored most of the time. We tried other kinds of soap, this seems to be the one. Good Luck!

Thanks everyone........dangergurly9, what should I do if he just so happens to like soap? He also loves tabasco and lemon juice. Someone told me to try "sour apple" which is a product for dogs. However, a horse person told me to try it. Have you or anyone used this product and what were the results?

My mare chews on stuff all the time too mainly when she is tied up or eagerly awaiting her dinner :) she doesnt chew too bad though and really id rather her do that than some other nastier habit so I don't worry about it too much. I growl at her when I catch her doing it but I don't fuss about it too much :)

I personally wouldnt worry about the muzzle unless his chewing is being destructive.

I thought that a horse that chews on wood is called cribbing.Try a cribbing collar.

We have used Ivory bar soap for years and have never had a horse like it...It has stopped some of the worst cribbing out of boredom I have ever seen....but then you never know! It is a very cheap idea to try. I have always had positive results with it, so I guess all I can say is that it worth a try.

Cribbing is windsucking which entirely different to a horse who likes to have a little chew on wood. When they are chewing there is no sucking motion like you see when a horse windsucks or, cribs. Its more an impatience thing I like or it is for my mare anyways
