My mare came in as normal for the night, was eating her hay net as normal, then had her dinner as normal and all of a sudden looked to be struggling with a blockage. Don't ask me how I knew it was a blockage as all she was doing was not eating and staring, but I just new!!
I waited a while and then she was trying to cough and her chest was tightening. Foam and throff was dripping out from her mouth and nose (at this point I called the vet) and she began to gurgle. She did not panic once but stood there, still alert to the people around her and things happening, pricking her ears etc.
The vet said that they usually clear the blockage themselves and it would be a waste of money for me to have her out.....she talked me through it all and even though I was very worried I did exactly what she said and waited.
She then started to gurgle louder and louder. I just stood with her and stroked her softly. The vet was very shocked that she wasnt panicking and thrashing around but as long as im there she never seems to panic about anything! Her whole neck had filled with fluid and I was really worried. Thinking why o why can't they throw up!
Anyway all of a sudden she wiped the white foam from her nose on the stable door and walked over to her hay net- of course I ran over and said no silly you can't eat that and took it off her and gave the vet a call. She said if she was trying to eat that the blockage had gone and to let her eat as normal.
I could not believe it- from caos to quiet in the most terrible half hour of my life (regarding horses). She didnt bat an eye lid and looked at me like id gone mad when I took her net off her! Hehe
Just wondering if anybody has had experience with it at all???? SCARY AS HELL!!
