Cleaning after riding Questions

Okay today I rode for a few hrs, thats including stopping and talking to people lol. It was about 77 degrees today and when I got back which was about an hr ago, it was about 70. Felt pretty good here in SC. My horse is a dark brown/black and white paint and he had some dirt spots on him, mixed with the sweat. I actually brushed him down this morning good before riding and today i didn't want to chance washing and rinsing him down some then trying to let him dry so i just brushed him down good after riding.

Would the best thing to do would of been to maybe get a bucket of warm water with a sponge, wring it out then just rub the sort of wet sponge over him, hitting all of the dirty spots especially then that way he wouldnt have had to dry too much?

I don't always rinse Dancer off. Up here in Virginia we had the same kind of weather and for the past few days I've just brushed Dancer even though he was sweaty. He just went and rolled afterwards anyway so got completely dirty again.
