To clip or not to clip? To blanket or not to blanket?

Hey guys, I thought I'd post this question here because I always love the variety of answers I get...
1) I read somewhere that blanketing can be unhealthy for horses and mess with the way they cool themselves down/warm themselves up. Not sure if that's true but I thought that if I was a horse I'd rather not be blanketed and grow a full natural coat than be blanketed all the time.
2) I also am wondering if you feel that clipping is absolutely necessary. I'd like to not clip as it feels more natural but I intend to keep my horse in work all season. I've ridden a pony that was unclipped all winter before, and then just walked her out for long periods of time after my rides to make sure she's dry. I feel like it's not that natural and a horse might not be as comfortable.
But I'm a new horse owner now and I want to do what's best for my horse, and I'll actually listen to you guys.
Let me know what you think/any experiences you have had :)
(of course if it's a winter like last year's - where it was like 40 degrees the entire time - I will clip because he will just be too warm if I don't!)

I don't clip or blanket, and I ride an average of 4/5 hrs a day several times a week pretty much all winter. Here it might be 60 degrees one day and 20 degrees the next & my horses are pastured 24/7 with shelter.

You certainly do not have to clip your horse. I do because I keep them in work and they dry much faster and I think they stay cleaner when clipped. I also really hate hair come spring time. However, if I wasn't going to ride in the winter, I wouldnt clip. Blankets can be a hassle to always change the weight.
