Colic Insurance

Does anyone know if you can just purchase colic insurance for your horse? I have a mortality policy on my horse, but we've already used it in so many areas, the pre-existing conditions block any future claims for most illnesses. I've finally got a decent horse emergency fund built up, but I would never be able to afford colic surgery, so I need to keep the insurance for that reason alone. Are there any companies that just sell colic coverage?

Hello,

There are a number of insurance companies out there. The most common companies we deal with are Markel and Great American. They offer custom policies that are taylored to your needs. The pfizer preventicare (colic assurance) program is being discontinued, so I would look at an equine insurance company.

I go through Markel. They didn't give me a colic-only option, but I got major medical, which colic surgery falls under.

Most companies sell major medical with their mortality coverage. It's not cheap and once you file a claim for something, they'll never cover it again in that horse's lifetime. For example, if you have to treat for Lyme Disease, they won't cover anything related to neurological ever again. It kind of stops being worth the premium when you have too many pre-existing things going on.
