corn oil

We have been having weight issues with star, it turns out that star is a late bloomer and is just loosing his caps off his teeth, so he's got a sore mouth.......the slave I am to my horses..... star get his feed made in to mash for every meal ( 1 gal scoop of mare and foal feed) x 2 daily, the vet also said to add corn oil in, just wondering if there is a alturnative to corn oil? Or any thing I can use?

I've heard of people using vegetable oil to help with shedding, and weight gain. Some people at my barn use it.

Corn oil or vegetable oil (which is just a mix of corn and other veg oils). I just pick up a big jug at Walmart when I get groceries. Start slowly and work your way up to a cup a day or so--whatever seems to work. It takes a couple of weeks for your horse's system to get used to so much fat in the diet but after that it should make a difference in weight and energy.

I give corn oil as well. But you certainly can go with veggie oil (it's usually more expensive though).

I've been feeding corn oil to DB, my old gelding as per the vet. I asked about using soybean oil and her office said it's not a good idea but didn't explain why. They said I could use vegatable oil instead but when I started reading lables all the vegi oil I found was soybean oil. I just stuck with the corn oil. They all cost about the same.
