Coughing horse

My two year old paso is coughing on rides. Is this just from him being out of shape?

How often are you riding him? When was he backed? He's only just turned 2, I personally wouldn't have backed him yet but as he seems to be already I'd be keeping his work to a bare minimum or, preferably, chucking him back out in the paddock til he's a bit older. As for the coughing, it may just be allergies or dust, but keep a close eye on if it goes on after the warm-up or if he coughs at all when not ridden. Is it a dry cough? A hacking cough? A sneeze?

Some things to ask yourself:

What environment is the horse kept in? Stalled inside? High dust and ammonia? Outside with a round bale? Head stuck in round bale all day?

Any nasal discharge, clear or colored? Goopey eyes? Excessive sweating? A history of any other conditions?

Think about these and let us know, because we cannot tell you what we think unless we have some more details.....
