Coughing horse and nasal discharge.

So my mare has been coughing for a few days. She had some dusty hay so I soaked it on water hoping it would help. I also picked up some cough free and just gave her some today. She doesn't seem depressed or lethargic and she had a normal temp of 99. I rode her the other day and she rode fine, didnt act out or anything. She had some clear nasal discharge but now it is almost a green color and coming out of both nostrils. I'm going to be calling my vet in the morning but I'm just wondering what this might be. She doesn't appear to have choke, I massaged her throat and couldn't feel any blockages. I'm hoping it was just the dusty hay and I hope she's not starting to get heaves. :S She will be moving out into the pasture tomorrow so I won't have to deal with feeding hay.

It could be some sort of respiratory/sinus infection. Hopefully it's something as simple as that. Let us know what the vet says.

I'm not sure what your barn setup is like, but I'd keep her separated from the other horses until you figure out what's going on...in case she's contagious.
goneriding and stevenson like this.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/
