Question Dapples

I have read quite a bit recently on here that dapples are caused by the health of the horse. I would like to know what exactly it is that causes dapples. Is it genetic or dietary or a mixture of both. Perhaps there is a genetic predisposition that is brought out by good health. Has any one ever seen a dappled chestnut horse? What do you all think about the cause of dapples and what is it in the diet that would bring out the dapples.

I've never heard that and I don't know it it is fact true. I can't see how the health of the horse would affect the coat pattern. I've seen dapple's that are very under nurished.

I believe that most horses have the capability to be dappled. Certain colors (like gray, and sometimes bay, brown and buckskin) are more frequently dappled and I believe it has to do with just their color. Being fat and healthy helps though. I think dapples are more easily recognized on horses who are slick and shiny although sooty horses somtimes show them regardless of weight and sometimes even in winter. I don't know, it is complicated.
