Do horses have to have back feet shod?

I know I have seen a mention about some horses only having the fronts done. Is there any balance problems when only the fronts have shoes? I ask because my boy clips the inside of his hind legs with his shoes when at a canter or lope. I can also hear them smack together in the back at the same gaits and usually only when he is turning, say in the roundpen. Would it benefit him to take his back shoes off? Or is there something else I can do? He is a soft dirt arena only horse right now but eventually I would like to be able to trailride with him. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, wasn't sure where to put it. Thanks
