dosing syringe problem

I have to administer oral meds and I am using a 60 cc dosing syringe. After about a week, the syringe "locks up" on me and I can barely move it in either direction. I have tried lubricating it with cooking oil...no go. Anyone got any suggestions? Is there a syringe out there better than what I am using now. Can't top dress his feed either ..Prince charming is picky about what he eats and will walk away.

Thanks....Jackie

Green Broke
I know with mine I have to take it apart and wash it between every use and dry it with it still apart. When I need it, I then reassemble. If I don't clean it or I put it back together before it dries the rubber part of the plunger stickers really bad and it's useless.

Yep, pull it apart, put it in a sink full of warm, soapy water, give it a clean and a soak, then put it back together. Cleaning syringes is a good habit to get into.

Showing
I just run them through the dishwasher, tube parts in top rack on the little stick things (for lack of better word) and plungers in the silverware basket.

Take it with you to the pharmacy and buy a new one if the washing doesn't help. They aren't much at all.

Just rise it in water, that's what I used to do when I had to administer steriods twice a day for months with a boarders horse, the syringes lasted a few weekd for me without getting to "sticky" the soap may be drying out the plunger? Or just ask your vet to give you a few extra.

I don't wash my syringes with soap(especially vaccination guns). The detergent in the soap will ruin the rubber in the plunger. Rinse with warm water. I have used a drop of olive oil to help lubercate the rubber. However 60cc syringes are cheap if you can find a place that carries them, might try the vets office.

Goodness! Thanks for such quick replies! I certainly DO wash them after every use but had not thought about the soap drying them out. Have tried the olive oil...didn't help. I really think it is the chemical in the med (doxey....) that is causing this to happen so quickly. I did look on line last night for dosing syringes and will probably order a few. Thanks Again!!
