Dry coughing noise

2 of my horses at my barn are making a dry coughing noise, I have never heard this before in all my years of owning horses. What could cause this? They are kept on a dry lot and fed free choice hay.

One of the horses at my barn sounds like this. He has COPD. Have you had a vet out to check? That would be my first step. Especially if you have experience and haven't come across this before like it sounds like you were saying

Yeah I have owned around 10 or 12 personal horses over the years and trained many others and I have never ran into this before. I plan on calling the vet soon I just wanted to see if anyone had seen somethin similar before.

It could also be allergies showing themselves or possibly some sort of respiratory infection? Good luck! I hope whatever it is is nothing, or else an easy fix!

Thanks! I hope it turns out to be somethin minor.

Mine had that and was diagnosed at the tail end of something viral, probably shipping fever. I had just gotten her. Was put on Uniprim and it solved it.

Maybe mine has something similar then. I will have to get the vet out to see what they think, I just really am not looking forward to another vet bill ha ha.

The first vet said allergies and put her on Histall. Didn't help. I got another vet....insisted on bloodwork where the viral infection was detected. Insist on bloodwork.

Yes, this has happened to mine this year. My 23 yr old mare was the worst, though my 14 yr old gelding coughed a few times too. Had the vet out, and he attributed a few things to it. Mostly, they got some dusty hay (my fault) and developed IAD (inflammatory airway disease).

I think getting blood work is an excellent bit of advice. Will help pin down whats happening.

Let us know what you find out.
