Emergency Please Read!

Okay so I run my own little horse rescue and today a friend is dropping off two horses that needed a home asap... Thankfully they are not underweight ( that I know of ) but to make things short needed to move them quick or something bad could happen to them.. One is a 15 yr old belgian... How much do I feed this horse.. I havnt the slightest clue.. I have never worked with draft breeds so im excited but have no idea what to feed her! I feed my TB's 2 scoops of grain 2 times daily.. My paints and quarter horses 1 scoop 2 times daily and whatever my rescues needs at the time.. I wouldnt even know where to start with a draft horse breed? Someone told me they are easier to feed as their metabolism is slower... But then I also heard that they will eat..eat...and eat untill they kill themselves and my horses are on free choice hay.. 2nd cutting alfalfa mix... Please help... lol.

Well I have worked limitedly with drafts, usually very little grain unless they are workin and they do not need great quality hay, a grassy 1st cutting is usually sufficient unless they have health issues, if its healthy and not working that should do.

Just feed it aroun 2% of it's approx body weight in hay and a good low grain formula feed, the draft horse diet is a GREAT diet for any horse. Drafts are more genetically prone to PPSM amuscle disorder which is triggered by sugars and starches(not a great explanation) therefor they advice against feeding them grains

So sence they have all day hay she should be okay on maybe 1/2 of scoop of grain 2 times a day? I don't have any other hay than my alfalfa so I have no choice with that. My horse feed consists of wheat bran, grain, corn, molasses, vitamins. I have my grainery make it for me.. Should I make a special order for her?

What grain are you using? The general guideline for how much to feed is going to vary from feedstuff to feedstuff. There should be some direction on the bag as to what amount to feed a horse by weight and usage.
