Question Empty water trough....

So, I have two troughs a 50 and a 100gal. The 50 the pony, dog and 4 sheep use. The 100 is out in the big pasture, only my paint mare uses it, dog and sheep are too short.
When I filled the 50 last time, it was half empty and the 100g was maybe 1/4 to 1/3 empty. So plenty of water.
I have been feeding all more hay and need to deworm the mare, already dewormed the pony.
When I went out to fill the 50, it had 1-2in water left, filled it and walked off. Then I saw my mare go to drink, but walked off with no water dripping off her muzzle. What?!
So I ran over and it was darn near bone dry!!! I refilled it and she drank some and went off on her way. She didn't drink a ton.
I didn't check it for holes as no one but the pony screws around with the trough, he's never kicked this one and they are new, about a year old, no rust back in the fall.

So, I will check it in the am, but in the mean time, what are some health reasons for a horse to possibly drink a boat load of water suddenly?
She looks, acts and eats normally. She even playfully sprinted over towards the barn, but stopped when she smelled something and went back to sniff it out, lol.

How long ago was that, though? The "last time" could have been yesterday (meaning roughly 50 gallons gone in one day) or a week ago - kind of a big difference in whether this would be abnormal amounts of water to have been consumed.

Health reasons, one would be cushings, but 40 gallons in what sounds like a really short time? I'd guess ya got a leak.

My guess would be a leaky trough my three horses go through a 100 gal tank of water in two days but that's 3 drinking from it. All three of mine are 1000 lbs horses so no ponys here.

I check roughly every 2wks, it was 3 or 4wks since I last refilled the 50.
The 50 was half full. The 100 was 70 or 80g full.

2 weeks?!? Wow. We go thru 100g for 3 horses every 3-4 days. And two of those horses are stalled 18 hours a day and have water there. In the summer we are easily filling the 100g tank every other day with 3 horses.

I think you need to be checking the water a lot more often then every two weeks. Even when I had only one horse here, a 100g tank wouldn't last two weeks...

Yea, mine aren't stalled or worked.
Mare and dog have been seen drinking water in the mini pond thing we have.
2ft deep, 8ft x 4ft wide or so. There's another right behind it, much smaller, more like a puddle.

I could, but they don't drink much. Summer I check it every week, lots evaporate and it gets gross, so it's dumped and refilled often.

Ew, just fill their water trough more often. Being worked has nothing to do with how much they drink when they are out in pasture just milling around. You should be filling the 100g tank at least 1 time a week, probably more.

They don't drink much because they don't have anything to drink. You are making them drink pond scum.
