Farriers: Founder Corrective Shoeing

Have you seen anything like this? This just doesn't make any sense!

Is the shoe to big? I've never seen anything like that. How is that supposed to help the hoof?

He was supposed to trim back the toe ALOT which he did but then the shoe extends the toe approx 1/4" negating the break over he just created. There is a giant gap between the hoof and the shoe!

I'm totally new to this. Is the shoe set with the toe super short to remove pressure off the hoof wall? That's all I could guess..Don't know, Hopefully someone knows exactly what's going on. Have you asked your farrier why they did that? I'd hope they would automatically explain what treatment they were going to use and how it will help.

Its one of my boarder's horses and not my farrier. (Thank God)

Ohh gotcha. I don't know :/ from what I've been told you want the pressure off the hoof wall I assume to avoid more seperation? I'm not a farrier though I can't say for sure.

Maybe he trimmed back the toe so short that the horse is sore. Is that white area some kind of pad on the front of the hoof in the right picture.
I can't figure out why the farrier would do this, but I'm still learning about feet. I'm curious about the method behind his madness.

Looks to me like he's trying to take all the weight and pressure off the toe, which is rather reasonable given the condition of the horse. Has anyone specifically asked him what he's going for there?

He did a mediocre job of the correct way to shoe a foundered horse. The goal is to get some drainage, which is why the shoe extends farther than the hoof. He did a rather crude job, but sufficient. The pad is to provide what little support it can to try and aid in comfort. Founder is tough to get over, it usually requires a grotesque foot job with the toe cut MUCH farther back. Anyway, that's my quick version.

Really? You know this how? Do all founders abcess? Do you know why on those that do? You have worked on how many so as to determine mediocre?

Looks to me as though the dorsal wall was unloaded/floated. Sometimes it is best to adress the most imediate problem first. Sometimes they don't respond to anything we(farriers/trimmers) do.
