As my mare isn't able to eat hay (no teeth) she has sloppy fast fibre, how much should i be giving her though 14hh arab lightweight mare 30 years (also has 2 feeds a day of weight gain mix and barley)
I feed my 30 yr old appy Beet pulp and Alfalfa pellets soaked if needed. Beet pulp is an excellent source of fiber and is easily eaten by horses who cannot eat hay etc. Another feed I uise and love is Total Equine. This is an extruded feed that is fed with NO grains. You can feed anywhere from 2# twice a day on up to full feed if necessary. It is not available everywhere.. Check the site if you are interested.
Thankyou, had a look on the sight but no its not available here!! I do give her sugar beet sometimes but she's such a fizzy old girl (typical arab) she's still ridden and worry that the beet makes her even worse its hard to keep her feet on the floor at the best of times.
Beet pulp should not make her hot. If it is doing so then it's the molasses they add to it. You can rinse that off with a colander. It's a PITA but I did it for a couple of years. Some places do have the beet pulp without molasses added. Good luck finding it.
