I have a few questions regarding feeding grains such as oats to my Arabian gelding. First off, he'll be 15 years in April, and has been a hard keeper in the winters, unless I really get his weight up during the fall. The problem for me is, I'm always afraid of feeding too much grain, I'm so worried he'll colic if I'm giving him too much. Right now I'm maintaining his weight, (the temperature these past couple winters has gone down to -50 C ) so I give him 3-4 cups of rolled oats with flax seed about three times a week.
Here is something I found though, this website - How Much to Feed your Horse? ...suggests how much grain to feed your horse once you put in their body weight, workload and body condition. Last time I measured my gelding, his body weight was around 960, he might be 1000 lbs now. I do light work with him, and his body weight is normal. The calculations though say to feed him 2.3 kg/5 pounds of grain! I measured my grain on my kitchen scale, and 5 pounds is 16 cups! Wouldn't that be too much? I have an 8 quart feed bucket, and the suggested amount of feed almost fills it full. Plus since he's an Arab, he does tend to get pretty hot with too much grain.
I just want to feed him properly, but I'm concerned and a little confused, how much is too much, and how much is too little? Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!
Here we go again. There is nothing but good advice I have given this person, just feeding hay year round 24/7 is not good and is just the bare minimum someone can do. I do not live by bare minimum standards, I go all the way or I don't go anywhere. Hence all the success I have had over the decades and being one of the most well known in the circuit today. People come to me for advice, I don't go to them.
Ah far as I can see your just someone on the internet, nothing special about you at all except in your own opinion. And your hardly the only person in this world thats had success
When you have success on a magnitude that I have then come and talk to me but until then keep your crap out of this discussion. And that is being nice. You can come meet me anytime you would like. I am part owners of Victory Farms and you are more than welcome to come and take a visit anytime you want to see how things are run and you just might learn something. I have been in this game for years, longer than you have been alive. I know a thing or two about horsemanship, something you clearly need to learn.
Personally I think your just some big mouth on the internet that knows nothing. I could care less what you've done or who you are you obviously know very little. And thats putting it nicely.
Like I said come and take a visit to the farms young one. Young people never let me down, they always think they know everything but in fact they know very little. I run one of the most successful barrel horsing farms in the country if not the most successful and your telling me I know nothing. Once again come and take a visit and you might learn something, but you seem that close minded I don't think anything will get through that thick skull of yours.
By the sounds of it you own a farm that the SPCA should be looking into. You hardly run a successful farm with this bull**** that you are spouting. Come and take a visit and see how things are run in the real world.
Arabian follow this advice and I promise you will not go wrong.
Feed a mixture of 12% Alfalfa pellets and 17% Alfalfa pellets with a blend of Source and Weight Gainer, give the horse 2 pounds in the morning and 2 pounds in the evening. You can get both supplements from State Line, you will not go wrong with this feeding schedule.
OK ... this has gone on far enough. There is no longer any substance in this thread so I' am closing it.
