Fibre levels for weight gain?

Ok so my big guy STILL is not at his ideal weight. I wouldn't say that he's underweight much, just that he needs a bit more to maintain working the 4-5 times a week that we are doing right now. The vet suggested I look into another brand a feed, as the feed shop I go to is a bit limiting.

So, he's on Nutrena Safe Choice right now, and has done well by it (he gained close to 300lbs), but he just can't seem to gain anymore, and he does lose it fairly quickly. So, one feed I was looking at was the Masterfeeds Podium, which I believe is a Canadian feed.

The big difference between the two is that the Podium has a higher fibre level at 21% vs 15% and a higher fat level 8% vs 6%. Would this be condusive to more weight gain? Or should I be looking for something else?

Any suggestions?

How much hay are you feeding him and/or pasture time?

He has unlimited hay via a roundbale (admitedly not the most fantastic quality, but as far as roundbales go, its pretty good) . The problem in summer is that he won't touch it, he'll go straight to the grass. Fortunately he's in a pasture that allows him to graze fairly well

I would keep him on the safechoice and add 3-5 lbs of alfalfa pellets to his diet. The AP will give him plenty of fiber and help augment his forage intake. Add to that 1 cup of oil or 1 cup of milled flax or 1 lb of stabilized rice bran for added fat.

Once he's up to a good weight, cut whichever fat source you choose by half, and cut down the Alfalfa pellets to 1.5-2.5 lbs. Feed the SC at the minimum level for his size and activity level.
