Filly with a swollen umbilical cord

Hello, I have a filly that is three weeks old and seems very healthy but this one problem. The base of her belly button has been swollen since she was born and it has not gone down. It is about the size of a large chicken egg. It doesn't seem to bother her and I haven't tried touching it to see if it hard or soft or hot and it isn't red at all. I have read that it could be a hernia or an infection which both require a vet. Does anyone know if this is normal and I'm just coursing a fuss or if it is serious problem? This is the first time my horse has had a foal so I don't really have much experience with young ones. Thanks

Was the vet not out soon after birth for the baby's first check up and to make sure all was well with the mare? Both hernias and infection at the belly need to be evaluated. Infection would need to be treated and the hernia it would depend.

Thanks guys. I have called the vet and she said that it doesn't sound to urgent but she will be out in the next couple of days to do an ultrasound. She said it can be normal for swelling sometimes but because it has been three weeks she said it might also be a hernia. Fingers crossed all is ok. Will post when I find out

Hi.
I had the vet come out yesterday to have a look. She had a feel for swelling and heat, which there was none. She then did an ultrasound to check that all was intact and healthy inside and around the umbilicus area. In conclusion she said it just sticks out funny from the body and that it should go away as she grows (shes seen it before). So good news that I have a healthy foal! But I would recommend for anyone out there with concerns about hernias or infections around the umbilical cords to get them checked out by a vet.

Glad you had the vet out.
If a horse has an infection at the umbilical area, joint ill is the outcome.
Since the filly was fine, showing no sign of being ill, (eating normal, no lameness, and normal temp)I would have assumed umbilical hernia, with many small ones resolving on their own
