    Finally Finished!

    We have been wanting to pasture in part of our hay field for the longest time. Let's see,,,, Lady (my horse) was 12 when I bought her and now she is 21yrs old. That long ago. At that time, no real gumption to do it, no real nohow, started using it for our own hay instead of renting it out to the farmers for corn, now 1/2 is pastured in for our girls. Here's my question, 1/4 of the pastured area is still alfalfa. The other part is just grass. I know when you start horses out on pasture you take it slow. And I don't think I would worry as much if it were just the grass but I know most of the girls will head straight for the alfalfa. How long can we graze them on that per day? 10 mins? 15 mins? Or can we break up some of the time during the day?

    I don't know if you would have the same problem we would around here, but I wouldn't let my horses graze on alfalfa at all. We have a terrible blister beetle problem, and I'm told it only takes ingesting one to really cause a real health problem for a horse.
