First Time Sheath Cleaning!

I was surprised and pleased to see how easily my boy let down for our first time sheath cleaning.

I didn't scratch or groom him, but I did place my hand directly over his sheath and told him its time to clean it. Then using slow circular strokes with my sponge, was into the sheath pocket. I used warm water, gloves, and a tiny bit of hand soap. The only thing I forgot to do was rinse with plain water. Oops. And, on looking for the bean, don't know if I looked in the right places. I sort of got into the place around the uretha, but I see from the internet sites there is another 'hole' to look into....
Oh well, it was a successful first time, so I guess he'll be fine the second time around if I need to be a bit more invasive!

Good for you! I gave my boy a proper 'clean' for the first time the other day and I feel bad that I hadnt done it sooner. He was very good although he didnt drop so had to do it all by feel. Never gotten a bean out but once I got up in there there was no mistaking what it was. When I got it out it was HUGE, must have been there for a long time. Hopefully he now feels much better, it can't have been comfortable! Its nice to be able to share without getting sideways looks from non-horsey people! I used KY jelly which is great since its water soluble and you don't need to worry about rinsing so much. Clean as a whistle now

Just asked my sister in law who is an equine vet. She mentions 3 places in the head that can hide the accumulated gunk. Great, now I have to look there more closely the next time I do this!

My friend's mare gets crusty in her ladyparts - we have to give them a regular clean in the folds. But then she's a right hussy...
