Flaccid Epiglotus/Dorsal Displacement of the Soft Palate

Hello -

I have a 11 year old Appaloosa mare with a diagnosed flaccid epiglotus and dorsal displacement of the soft palate.

Maddie goes well at the walk/jog/trot, but when we lope/canter her breathing gets haggard and it's obvious that she is having a hard time getting air.

I currently have her on Ani-hist which does a great job of supressing her cough, but does not open up her air way.

My vet has suggest a toungue tie and a flash nose band - neither are acceptable in the show ring. And I have a feeling that she would not be a happy campter witha toungue tie.

The only other option that I have heard of is a tie back or a tie forward operation - has anyone had any experiences with these?

Or any other options that I have not tried that have worked for you?

Thank you!
