Flax - to grind or not to grind

You don't need to do anything to it, just add 1/4-1 cup of the whole seed to his feed ration. You can feed up to 8 oz (by weight) a day. 1/2 cup seems to me the best amount to start with, and you can play around with it from there.

I feed 1/2 cup of Nutra Flax from HorseTech.com--Horse Nutrition Supplements--Equine Nutrition on the Net I have them custom blend BioFlax with it, to give some hoof goodies and amino acids along with the flax. It's not cheap, but so far it's within my budget .

I grind mine. It doesn't take very long. I use to feed grandcoat but its cheaper just to buy flax in bulk.

I was wondering, is the ground flaxseed sold in grocery stores similar to the stuff you buy at feed stores?

Yes, but exponentially more expensive, lol. You need to feed at least 1/2 cup (2 oz by weight) for any real nutritional benefit for the horse. If you have the people variety ground already, then sure, you can feed it to your horse. But don't buy the human grade flax from the store for your horse. You'll go broke, quick, lol.
