Flesh Wound! Desperate for help!!!

A bull dog literally busted into my horses pen today and severely bit her on the leg.
It is a horrible flesh wound, you could actually see the bone!
I seriously had a panic attack, I didn't know what to do!
The man that helps me take care of my pony was in another
town 100 miles away, and no one was around but me as
My pony bled. My grandpa arrived home about 30 mins.
Later and he sped to the farmers store and got some medicine for it.

My mom got off of work and she sprayed some horse antiseptic on her leg
And some Fura- Zone ointment on it and wrapped it up.
After wrapping it up, she hasn't moved around too much and is laying down. I'm REALLY worried.
We're going to give her a pennisciln shot tomorrow.

I really don't have any money to take her to the
Vet right now, and any advice on this would be very nice!

It is definitely best to get a vet out and make sure all her shots are up to date(tetanus etc)

The only vet we have here doesn't come out to homes,
and he only works on small animals! :(
I'd probably have to load her (And with her leg I don't
want to do that!) and take her to the vet in another town.

I do know she's had a tetanus shot right before I gotten her.

I would definitely shoot the dog. Do you know if it was just being mean or was it sick like rabies? You need to find out.
You are doing the right thing for your situation. Keep it wrapped and get her on some antibiotics. Anytime mine have had a really deep cut, I try to get the skin to go back together as best I can, keep anticeptic balm on it and keep it covered. Kotex and vet wrap work good for leg injuries. Make sure you don't wrap it to tight. I wish Ryle our Vet Tech member was on she would give you better advice
It sounds bad to shoot the dog but I know in Kansas we do have the right to shoot dogs that are endangering livestock. I wouldn't think twice about it and I love dogs. If he did it once he will do it again.

Leg injuries always look bad because theres all those tendons and stuff in there close to the skin. Hopefully the bleeding has stopped and she is standing. Since you are so far from a large animal vet it may be a good idea to get a simple horse health book to keep on hand for emergencys. I like Cherry Hills books they are pretty basic and easy to understand but a lot of farm stores carry different ones.

Make sure you keep the opposite leg wrapped too to keep her putting pressure on both legs.other words she can hurt her leg that is fine now. Make sure you keep the cut clean and like you said you were keep putting anitbiotics on it. Whenever you can though you need to get a vet to look at her. I know a friend of mine just had to put her pony down because it got just a minor(no stiches) cut on its fetlock but she turned him out in the field without wrapping it (just ointment on it) and it got infrected. To make a long story short the infection spread through the tendons and about a month later the pony was put down. Cuts down to the bones are serious things!!! They need to be taken care of immediatly and effectively!!!

Keep up with what you are doing and get a vet out or get her to a vet!!

If you can get ahold of some powder antibiotics to sprinkle over her feed for five days, that would be good in my opinion. Also keep topical antibiotic cream on the wound. I would change the bandages at least on time daily, making sure to clean everything, remove debris, reapply cream, and new bandages. Changing it daily will allow you to check on the status of the wound - is it worse? Better?

If at all possible, see a vet soon. Another possibility is if your family is friends with a nurse or doctor, see if they will have a look at it. I am blessed with a nurse in the family, and it comes in handy for wound dressing and care.

As much as she does need a vet, myself if I was in your position and could not get 1 out, I would.... clean it really well with the best first aid cleaner you can get, fill it will honey ( has to be comletely organic not heat treated mallaluca is best but there are other types that will work) and bandage it, don't take the bandage off for around 4 days as the honey keeps it clean it wont need cleaning. Id give a tetnnus shot and the pennicillun that yuo are going to give. I have heard of amazing stories that have worked with just honey, myself I have used it a number of times on deep cuts and with in 1 day you can see the difference. Still though if there is anyway possible to get a vet to it then that would be really good.

I wonder if a small animal vet would know how to treat it, or could give you antibiotics for it. I know there's a huge difference in treating a cat with a leg wound, than a horse, but I would think the procedure to do it wouldn't be too different.

If you don't want to trailer your horse, maybe just call around to different vets and ask them. It couldn't hurt.
