I have a call into the vet... Waiting for a call back. Not sure what to think about this while Zee is rehabbing from the left front torn suspensory. Below are my notes from Sunday & yesterday. I'm at work now, so I can't check on him today until I get out of the office. I spoke briefly with my trainer this morning. She said she did not see him over exerting himself when turned out yesterday, but I asked if he could be given a small amount of Ace today, just in case he's overdoing it. We're just past two months since he's been rehabbing.

Any ideas??

Zee having trouble lifting hind legs. When asked to pick up his foot, he lifted his entire back left leg from the stifle, over flexed hock, and unable to relax his weight into my hand. Pushing leg to the outside while holding it up. Did on right side as well. Tried 6-8 times on each side with same result. My trainer believes he has a bog spavin. Large soft fluid lumps on outside and inside of left hock. While tacking up, started to “park out” as though he was going to urinate. Sheath (not penis) extended and slightly swollen looking. No urinating, but unable to stand still. Walked him under saddle, light trotting for a minute. Seemed hitchy and hard to get going at the trot. Rechecked later in the evening. Fluid in hocks appeared to have gone down slightly, easier to pick up back feet. Had gone outside in limited turnout Friday & Saturday, not Sunday.

Checked on Zee Monday night. Fluid lumps still present on left hock. Slightly larger, particularly on the inside. Left hind ankle quite swollen, but only slightly warm. Picking up feet fairly normal. No parking out. Hand walked for 10 minutes, trotted for soundness. Did not seem lame, but left hind hock & ankle seemed sticky at the trot. Continued walking and swelling in ankle decreased by about 50%.

Pics below are from last night, of the left hind leg.

I'm not sure what the heck is going on. His behavior worried me on Sunday, but he showed no lameness, and seemed fine Sunday night. The swelling in the fetlock was new last night, but again, no heat and no pain present. I'd say its stocking up, but he was turned out yesterday, and there was no signs of stocking up in the right hind. Strange...

Aww, poor Zee :( I would've guessed stocking up, but that doesn't equate with turnout and only being one...hmmm. Hope u get a quick call from vet and figure it out. Sending healing vibes your way!

A low grade infection maybe? Our old thoroughbred mare at work gets puffy hind legs sometimes, as a result of an old infection in the tendon that's never really gone away. It doesn't make her lame - I hunted her when it was a bit puffy once, and by the end of the day it had gone down to normal.

Well, I just spoke with my vet. She is not surprised and expected something like this. Believes it to be a side effect of his recovery period. She said at his age, he is most likely stiff and having trouble with circulation from all the rest. So, continued work, continued turnout and watch for any lameness. Thank goodness its nothing worse!
