Front Leg Injury

Hello!

I am currently horse-sitting for a friend of mine, and when I headed out to feed this morning I noticed that their older thoroughbred mare was rather lame. Her right front leg was swollen, though not hot. I looked closely at it and it seems that she might have hurt her tendon. I have already notified her owners, and am keeping a close eye on it and doing everything I can. I would appreciate some opinions as to what you think it might be. I am concerned it may be a bowed tendon, but I am hoping it isn't. I have no idea how this old mare did it, she was in her large, safe stall all night...

Anyway, all advice and opinions are appreciated! Apologies if the pictures aren't that great, I took them tonight before it got too dark out with my cell phone.
Thank you!

They have wonderful ways to freak us out, don't they?? :)

I found my mare with a similar swollen leg a few days ago, also no heat but with a definite scrape near the splint bone area. I cold hosed her leg and gooped up the scrape with Fura-zone a couple times each day and she's back to normal after 2 days. And she did it in her nice big well bedded stall over night...silly horse :-(

Since you have already alerted the owners, they should be the ones to make the decision to call a vet or not. Cold hosing may help reduce the inflammation and so long as there is no heat or obvious wound, just watch and wait.

Good luck with her. :)

Thanks! They are coming back into town tomorrow, and are planning on calling the vet. I've been smothering it with arnica gel and wrapping it as well. I was planning on hosing it off later today. I'm sure she'll be fine, I just hated walking out and seeing her limping so badly.
