Question Help with immune system...

Is there such a thing as an equine daily supplement that will help boost a low immune system? My guy is the first to catch anything and the last to get rid of it...I think he could use the extra help!

(BTW he IS seen regularly by the vet and up-to-date on everything!)

A healthy diet is the best key to a healthy immune system ..

Any kind of multi-vitamin will help, but there are supplements out there that you can feed for building a stronger immune system.
Horse Supplement, Horse Supplements, Feed Supplement - Global Herbs
Those guys have some stuff called ImmuPlus and I had a friend who used it and swears by it.
I personally allow them to build their immune systems by themselves. We vaccinate for only the most important. Otherwise if they get sick, they'll build an immunity to that and over time will have stronger immune systems.

I would have to say that a good, balanced (this is the key--lots of people aren't feeding a balanced diet) is the basis for maintaining good immune system function. Add to that not over-stressing a horse ---long trailer rides, over-work, etc.

There are lots of supplements out there that are claimed to help the immune system, but I would be cautious about which ones I spend my money on. I have a friend who is an herbalist and have had her look at some of the different products on the market. Most of them have had very little in them that is actually geared towards immune system function.

Yup, a healthy diet is the first step toward building immunity. Good quality hay and lots of it, a balancing concentrate if you need to feed anything extra, or a good broad spectrum vitamin/mineral supplement mixed with hay pellets or beet pulp if you prefer a more natural diet.

To help boost the immune system on top of that I would feed a probiotic like Source Micronutrients and an Omega 3 supplement like whole or milled flax. The probiotic will help ensure he's digesting all of the nutrients you're giving him, and Source has algae, which some people believe boost immunity. Omega 3s help improve cell repair, and flax will improve skin, coat/hair, and hooves.
