So the horse that I ride has some kind of lump on her belly close to her naval and teets. It is just off the center line, to the right. What could this be?! Posted via Mobile Device
Looks like a hernia. As long as it doesn't get larger or bother her, it shouldn't be a problem. If it gets worse, the vet would have to do surgery. Posted via Mobile Device
Thanks everyone! I couldn't get too close of a look since my mare tried to kick me but it doesn't look like an insect bite - I couldn't see any kind of sting. She hasn't always had it - it was there yesterday. Also, she has been lame in the hind end for a few weeks now (which is another issue that we can't figure out - vet did x-rays and everything is fine) Any relation? And, if it is a hernia, do they go away? And is it okay for her to exercise? Posted via Mobile Device
Sometimes if the hernia is small it will heal on its own. If it isn't a bad tear a horse can live with a hernia without problems. I would still have a vet evaluate it though.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I took a closer look at it today and it seems to have "deflated" a bit so I'm thinking it is a bug bite. My mare let me feel around it and she doesn't seem to be in any pain. I also felt a little bump but I'm not sure if it's her bell button or a bite. Either way, it looks better!
