Help, My horses eye is swollen shut

Today I had a farrier appointment and went out to the barn early to bring the horses in and clean their feet. When I approached my geldings stall I noticed he had his right eye shut and running. I figured he was just dozing and tried to wake him up, but he wouldn't open his eye. I moved to the left side of his head and found that the other eye was wide open. Standing in a spot where I could examine both at the same time, I saw that the upper lid and around the left eye was swollen preventing him from opening his eye all the way. I attempted to lift the upper lid to see if anything foreign was in there, but he was having none of it. He has no record of eye problems in the past. Should I call the vet?

Yes!! Eye issues are always emergencies, and time is of the absolute essence if he hopes to retain his sight.

Eyes? Yes, I would call the vet, if it is no better tomorrow AM.

There isn't a whole lot that we civilians can do with eyes. If he will stand for it, you might try dosing the eye with lukewarm to cool water. If he will allow cooler water, it will help with the swelling. A squirt bottle (like a dishsoap style bottle) held upside down above the eye will allow you do run the water over and around his eye without being invasive.

It could be nothing more than an insect bite or an allergy, but it could also be, as you say, a foreign object. You have to make a judgement on whether you call the vet tonight or wait til tomorrow.

I've just went out to see how he's doing, the swelling has gone considerably and he can open his eye almost completely.
