Help please absecess or result of tick!?!?

I need some help/advice as I really can't afford/don't want to contact a vet if its unessasary. My 15 year old thoroughbred had a pretty big bruise under his foot which the farrier popped open about 2 weeks ago, he told me to bathe it and keep putting iodine on it all in which I did for about a week. I went on holidays (1 week) came back today and his lower leg is swollen :/ I dunno if its an abseccess or not can anyone help? He isnt lame at all and was trotting around on it fine. The other thing is I found a tick (pretty sure it was paralysis) on the same leg up a bit higher in which a massive amount of pus and blood ran out of when I pulled it out so I dunno if maybe the swelling is from that? Any advice given is much appreciated!

Are you keeping the hole or wound you found the tick in clean? Have you tried cold hosing his leg once to twice a day? How is it now? You may want to try, after you clean well, dry the leg with a towel, the massaging will help with circulation, putting an antibacterial wound cream on the hole, depending on how big it is, and around it, doing that daily till you begin to see improvement. What stuff do you keep in your barn for wound care?

i put iodine on it which is whatwe use over in ausfor cuts ets and washed it out it was only small (the tick) but so much liquid came out :/

1st of all, is the bottom of the foot healing up nicely? If not I would suggest wrapping it for 12 hours a day with a poultice to draw out the nastiness and to help clean it clean along with epsom salt soaks.

As far as the leg being swollen, without seeing it I couldn't say what it's bein caused by, but I would certainly try cold hosing and keeping the wound where the tick was clean. I'd wrap it with some ointment or something for half the day and then, probably at night (less bugs and flies) take the bandage off and let to air get to it to try and heal it.

If nothing helps then I'd say it's time to call the vet.

For an abscess on the hoof you probably should have soaked it in epsom salt for a few days. Is that what you meant by washing it? Generally you want to slather a drawing agent on it rather then just iodine as well. That could have closed up and locked what hadn't finished draining from the hoof inside and caused the leg swelling. With the puss running out where the tick was pulled though, that could mean something much more.

Is there heat? Is the horse severely lame? Is the horse running a temperature?

I have soaked it with ebsom salts etc for about 4 days and it improved lameness went away and he doesnt show ant signs of it currently, just a swollen leg. I bandaged where the tick came out after washing it and put some ointment on it. The farrier cleaned his foor out for me before I bandaged it properly so I don't think that's it :/ he is acting normal just the swelling scared me a bit.
