Exclamation Help!! Really need help with my pony!

Two days ago me and my mum went to the field where my pony Hughey, and 4 others horses live. The field is very soggy from all the rain we have had and they are all in rugs. Hughey had developed a big swollen eye, the whites of his eye is very red, his tear duct part is very pink and open, and his eye is all gooey. Sound like a common eye infection, but the worrying part is the whole of the left hand side of his face, down to his nose has sunken into his face, this face looks as if it has been pushed in, it looks really bad. His face dosent hurt him but his eye dose. Me and mum have been washing it out with cold water and cotton wool, and then putting Broclor eye drops in it, these are drops are antibiotic and are brought from a pharmacy. We have just invested in Golden Eye cream, which wont sting as mum when we put it in, and is easyier to apply. I have looked al over the internet for photos of this, and websites to help. But I have never seen anything like this and nither has the internet. Help me if you know what this is or what we should do. Really need to know, he's my pony and I love him xxx

I think you need a vet out ASAP.

Can he eat and drink ok? I mean his face "sunk in" has not affected his ability to eat or drink? And is ther any evidence of having been kicked in the face? Does he hava a fever? If you can't get him to avet until tomorrow can you keep him somewhere where you can keep a closer eye on him?

Does he have any other symptoms? The atrophy in his face sounds like paralysis of the nerve, maybe due to trauma that may have caused the eye to swell like it has. Normally nerve paralysis like that would cause other issues in the face though, like a drooping lip or ear on that side, or as tinyliny suggested, problems eating/drinking.

Is he fed hay, and if so, is it particularly seedy? My boyfriend inputted saying a horse on his mum's old yard had a grass seed work it's way into it's tear duct, causing similar symptoms to your boy's.

Whatever it is, I really hope the vet gets to him soon, eye problems are really not to be messed with.

Glad to hear you're taking him to the vets. Its possible that he's been kicked and its caused enough damage to the nerves to deaden the pain for the time being at least
Please let us know how it turns out

Do you know what is wrong with him yet?

If it is the hard, boney part of his face sunken in, it sounds like he could have run into something hard or been kicked in the head and caved in a sinus cavity or two. I have sure seen that happen. The orbit around the eye can also be fratured that way.

We had the vet out, turns out he's got a fractured skull and acuten conjuntivitus, he's on Bute, and is having steroid and antibiotic injections, there's nothing they can do to his face though. A fractured skull can affect his tube from his eyes to his nose though resulting in runny nose, blood clots in his nose, runny eyes. But he's going to be OK .

I'm glad he'll be OK. Any idea how that happened?
