Where I live it's bug season all year round.
Would like suggestions on something besides pesticides.
I do use skin so soft. Have tried a vinegar and listerine mix but it didn't work that's great

Have you tried mixing the vinegar and skin so soft? That's what most people around here use, it's also good for preventing rain rot. You can also try a feed supplement, one of the horses at the barn used to take it, it was basically a bucket of garlic powder and she got an oz or two a day. Although there really isn't much proof the garlic works (as far as I quickly googled, feel free to actually research).

I have not tried this before but everyone around here mixes 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup water, 1 cup green dish soap. They say you have to add dish soap last. They all swear by it but I have just usually bought the non pesticide horse sprays. They typically contain clove oil and work pretty decent around here.

Iv tryed the garlic last spring and summer didnt seem to do anything plus the horses didnt like it.Had to put molasses in their grain to get them to eat it what a sticky mess. I just use fly spray i buy at fleet farm its horse and pony oil based works great water based dont work at all. We have really bad bugs flys, deer flys ,and horse flys only oil based stuff reples them. My horses have to be in the barn all day till dark or the bugs drive them to running. Had no luck with homemade sprays would be nice if they would work would be alot cheaper.
