My horse "Charlie" Just got his teeth done for his first time in his life, he is 12 and a OTTB I bought him last year around.. February. When the dentist looked at him he said he had 2 large hooks in his mouth. He drilled them down a little but is comming back in 6 months to finnish them. I use a nose net on charlie outside because he flicks his head a lot. I thought it was from allergies but now im not so sure... also he grinds his teeth a ton and is usually grumpy.. could this be from his teeth? he is also hard to put on weight. is there any supplement i could give him to have a happier mouth? thanks!!
I just about died when I read that! A 12yr old that has never had his teeth done!!:shock: No wonder he had two large hooks!!
To answer your question - yes the head tossing, teeth grinding, attitude and difficulty putting on weight could (and are most likely) be caused by his teeth.
Horses teeth are like rabbits teeth, they continuously erupt from their gums. If there is pain (ie; from sharp points, ulcers etc) then they will chew differently which will change the wear patterns on their teeth. This in turn will make the problems worse. It's a vicious cycle.
The only thing that will give him a happier mouth it getting his teeth done regularly. You should then find the head tossing, teeth grinding and attitude will stop as well as finding it easier to keep weight on him.
I tend to agree with toto on this, and add its a horse by horse case.
We just had a 10/12 yr old floated, and it was his first.
What I don't understand is why it wasn't done done. Ours take a half hour to float, why couldn't the hook be removed? And what else was half donkey?? Posted via Mobile Device
Yeah i know my jaw about hit the ground when i heard he has never been done... i bout him when he was eleven and shareboarded him sence he was 10, but the only reason they couldnt file the hook down all the way was because the gum and root were growing down with it kinda like a dogs toe nail.. when you dont cut them the pink part (root, skin, blood, whatever) grows with it so he said in 6 months it will go back to its normal place and he can file it all down. Thanks for all your guys help!
