Horse with arthritis?

My one mare is 10 and she is stiff when she walks some days she is worse than other days. Is there a supplement that I could give her to improve her condition?? I have heard that glucosamine works but I have no idea how much you give a horse??

Go on to smartpak.com and look at all their supplements. I've started giving my horse MSM which is good for the joints and it comes prepackaged and premeasured and only costs like $9 a month.

If you think that arthritis might be the problem, look for a product with the highest amount of glucosamine you can find in combination with condroitin and even MSM.

You could also talk to your vet about getting your horse on Adequan IM--I have seen great results with this in arthritic horses, even 20+ yr olds that were still used for playdaying.

Ryle is right, go for something with glucosamine, condriotin, and MSM. There's also an acid found in citrus fruit that's really beneficial, too. You may want to have a vet check her over first, just to make sure she doesn't have anything else making her stiff. The vet should also be able to help you out with what to look for in a supplement.

I use Farnam Platform for Hoover's ankles, but just check out the different kinds. You can do a powder, liquid, or pellet. Horse.com has a nice selection, as does drsfostersmith.com.

Unfortunatly I live out in the booners, with limited access to Vets, feed stores etc.. The nearest vet is 30 miles away and is very green just out of vet school. My regular vet is about 60 miles away and she takes summers off to be with her hubby and kids. The nearest feed store is now 87 miles away as the one in town has gone out of business. I can only get to the city about once a month so I will have to wait til I can get there is see what options I have. I can't order on the internet as I don't have a credit card. But thanks alot for the suggestions they are really appreciated.

Aappyfan1, You should be able to order by phone and send a check or money order to most online catalog stores. Email them and ask.. ;)

Depends on where the arthritis is, but you an get injections... from memory they are given 2 or 3 times a year, directly into the said joint. Works great for a few horses that I know.
Depends on how much you are wanting to spend, but one of my friends in particular swears by them.
Would have to speak more to your vet about it though
