I'm so upset. The lady who has become a friend at the barn, who's horse that colic'd has been put down. I gave the guy a hug and positive thoughts yesterday..ugh this sucks.

On another note I found out the horse was worked hard barrel racing(by her daughter, I believe) and then after that something went wrong. Not enough water? Fed to quickly while hot? I don't really want those answered, just talking to myself.

Im sorry. It always sucks when they go. I care for several very old horses and I wake at night with anixety and drive to the farm to check. Ive lost my own too. Its never easy, I just gotta love the ones I have a little more.
Dont look for any answers, they wont help, just know he isnt in any pain.

Thank you both. It has been a tough few days for her. I don't know all the horses at the barn but Blue was one I'd go give a few scratches to as I walked by, because he always nickered. I can only offer her quiet hugs and let her tears flow. She's had the horse for about three years and this is the first time anything has happened.

With all of the strange weather patterns - the barometric pressure is all over the map. Horses can be sensitive to those abrupt changes.

hugs to you and your friend. I've been there, I know how it feels.

You may never know what caused the colic. It could be something totaly random so no use pinning the blame on someone
Believe it or not giving water to fast or too much after hard exercise can cause colic too.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It was sad at the barn yesterday. Mostly shock from other boarders. I will be seeing the horse's owner today. Its going to be emotional.

I will also monitor my horses when we have weather changes. Always learning on this forum...thanks everyone.

I am so sorry to hear about this happening to you (your barn) We have a 30-something year old horse out at our barn and today he was not doing well at all. I'm afraid our barn will be sharing your barn's pain very soon. =( Always a difficult thing to do. But, in the end, I think euthanasia is sometimes the right thing to do.

Hugs to you and your friends, human and animal.

Sorry to hear that but agreed euthanasia is always the right thing to do when an animal is suffering. Sometimes we humans can't let go and hold off doing it for own sake.

I saw the owner of him yesterday and she is extremely sad. Thank you for your hugs.
