Horse Feed

Alright it is me again . I am thinking about switching to Seminole Pro-Plus 12 sweet. I was curious to if anyone else has used it before? Do you know how much it is and does it do the job?

I stay away from all sweet feeds. Far too much sugar. I prefer a dry pellet.

I don't like straight sweet feed at ALL...I use Nutrena Safe Choice which is a dry pellet and mix in Purina Omolene 200 that is an all grain feed (kinda like a sweet feed but ALOT btter) for my barrel horse..my other horse is 21 and he gets Nutrena Life Design Senior..I just don't think sweet feeds cut it..I wouldn't recommend it to anyone..and you definitely get what you pay for..Cheap prices mean cheap feed..Just my opinion..

I don't feed any grains, period. My gelding is a very easy keeper though; all he gets, aside from hay, is just enough soaked alfalfa pellets to mix his vit/min supplement and rice bran in.

Can you tell us a bit more about your horse - age, work load, any health problems, easy/hard keeper, does he need to gain weight, lose, maintain, etc.? What is he getting right now (in weight please)? Type of hay/how much?

Ugh no..I looked it up and I wouldn't feed that ever.. <<Amazing feed..has ALOT better stuff in it than the seminole..

Purina even has this thing going now called The Sixty Day Challenge..you should try that..it's like you feed their feed for 60 days and if you don't see a difference in your horse they will buy the feed..

See I think SafeChoice is too high in sugar/starch too. It's 20% sugar and starch where most sweet feed is 30-40%. I also have one choke prone horse so I can't feed pellets.

So I feed Triple Crown Senior. It's 11% sugar/starch, 17% fiber, 10% fat and 14% protein. It has too many calories for my adults so I cut it with TC's 30% supplement. They get what they need without too much sugar.

Having said all this, what you're "supposed" to do per Dr. Kellon the equine vet specializing in nutrition is have your hay tested and supplement to balance your hay and that's it. My hay source isn't consistent and well.... I'm lazy :)

ETA: My horses aren't in even moderate work though I do have a couple young ones. I have no idea really how to feed a horse that's worked hard.

Yeah, I see exactly what you're saying..My mare is worked/ridden about 5 or 6 days a week and my gelding is about 3 or so ( I get lazy with him)..but I like it alot because I do have performance horses and it works really well for them..and I didn't say anything about the hay in my last post but I completely agree with you..I don't think your feed is going to do any good if you don't have nice hay..

My horses are also free choice supplements in the pasture with them.forgot that too..

I agree about the sweet feed I feed 11:8 11% protein with 8% fat. Its a dry pellet. It still has sugar but very little. Along with that I feed MSM joint supplement during the winter months and a vitamin. And of course minerals.

Seven7max- Seminole offers way better feeds than that one. Tell us a little about your horse and we can help you pick the right Seminole feed for you if you wish to stick with that brand. I personally use Wellness Compete Safe.

I guess I need to ad to my original post. I am in college, have a truck(expensive on gas), two horses(vet bills expensive...), hay cost,... Need I go on. That is one of the only reasons I wanted to find something a little cheaper. I feed safechoice to both of my horse ad give them wach a small amount of sweet feed just for a littlw treat(sugar...). My Walker(Seven) has bad allergies. I was thinking of Nutrena Legacy Pellets. I read somewhere that it was a good choice for allergy prone horses. Percheron Paint(Max) cross is somewhat of an easy keeper. They get pasture at night, stall during the day with hay. I am trying to think of everything, sorry if I leave something out.
