Horse having pains in back and rear?

So in the past week my horse has gone from a perfectly fine riding horse to a horse that shows more and more signs of pain each time I ride (I laid him off now) . A little info, he's an 11 y/o OTTB. Some signs, dipping his back when I brush/ apply pressure, kicking out when I apply polo wraps (not at me, it was pain) , also kicking out when I applied Ice tight to his stifle, nipped at me when I cinched him up (he's NEVER done this) and I can't get him to collect. Well, most of these are accompanied by his head lifting up and his ears pinned back. I feel sorry for him. I just don't know what would onset all of this pain so quickly? I've been putting ice tight from his withers to his tail and from his hips to his fetlocks on the rear legs. Any idea what might be going on with him? Vet thinks it might be a possible pinched nerve but I just talked to him on the phone, chiro will be out Thursday.
