Horse Insurance

I've seen the fancy equine insurance ads in Dressage Magazine. I assume that's for the multi-million dollar performers such as Totillas.

But what about the average horse owner? Do you all carry insurance on your horses? Do you carry health and liability? Do you carry mortality?

I'm getting closer to buying my first horse, and want to do everything right (including purchasing insurance if needed).

I'm just planning on pasture boarding the horse at a local barn. Will ride 1 to 3x per week. I might go to a local show once or twice per year.

What type of insurance would I need and how much is it going to cost me? $20 per month? $200 per month?

The value of your horse has a lot to do with your decision. All our horses are in the $1500-$3500 range and it doesn't make financial sense to pay for insurance. We just save the $$s we would spend for insurance in a fund to pay if/when we need the vet.

Gotcha. What about liability insurance? What if my horse kicks another horse and causes damage? Would that be covered under the BOs policy? Do I need coverage for something like that?

We don't board, but a BO's policy covers any liability just like our homeowner's does for us. BTW, I don't think kicking another horse is something you need to worry about for liability. Typical liabilities issues are people getting hurt or horses getting off the property and causing damage, e.g. running in the road and colliding with a car. For liability, you need to check with an insurance agent because the laws vary from state to state.

Maybe it varies from state to state, but my BO's liability would not cover me for anything if my horse were to get loose and cause a car accident, damage property, etc. They require all boarders to carry their own liability insurance up to some amount (don't remember exactly what it was). My existing homeowner's policy covers liability for my horse, though, so I didn't need to buy anything extra for this.

I do buy mortality/major medical for my horse, though. I only have one (it gets really pricey when you start thinking of covering multiple horses!) and while he wasn't super expensive, he also wasn't super cheap. Vet bills add up very quickly and I like knowing that if something bad were to happen I could make decisions based on the best possible outcome, not based on what it's going to cost.
