Horse Nose Bleed... Please help, Need advice now

I just went out to do my evening feeding and my mare (9 years old) had a trickle of blood coming from her left nostril. I cleaned it out and couldn't see any cuts or anything, seemed like it was coming from deeper within. She was ridden yesterday and not today at all and from what I can tell (based on the amount of blood), it lasted about 15 minutes (it seems like it's stopping now). I've had her for 2 years and this is the first one she's had. I tried calling my vet and their answering service asked me if it was a "dire emergency". I said I didn't think so but I didn't know for sure as I've never had a horse with a nose bleed before. Any thoughts? Should I get the vet out for an emergency call or wait?

Use the emergency line to get thru to the vet so you can talk to them at least.

I'm not a vet but if it were my horse, here's what I'd be thinking. I'd be worried if it was more than trickle of blood, and if it hadn't stopped fairly quickly (15 minutes is about as long as people's nosebleeds) I'd definitely call the vet. I would watch like a hawk to see if it happened again and call the vet again if it did. Also, if it bled from the other nostril I'd be more worried as well. If there were swelling, anything other than a slight clear discharge, etc., I would also be more concerned.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Talked to the on-call vet and she said that since it was short and just a trickle that it probably wasn't serious. She's almost due for her check-up though so I'll have them come out next week, just to be safe. :) Thanks again!
