Horse shots

I recently purchased 3 horses and was wondering what vaccines are now required for most horses? When I had horses years ago in Colorado all we only gave was the 4 way shot once a year. I live in VA and the local vet named about 9 shots she insisted they must have yearly. That sounds like a lot of shots for horses that rarely if ever leave home. What do you give your horses?

Thank You!!!

I live in Quebec and my horse had...I think it was five way plus three and a coggins test. The shots he got were:
EEE
WEE
Flu
Tetnus
Rhino
Rabies
Potomac
West-nile-virus

I don't even know what half those things are.

LOL - I'm not sure what most of those are either but it sounds about what my vet told me. What happened to the good ol days when one shot would suffice? Sure glad I'm not a horse. I just had my flu shot and that was bad enough

We do a 4 way only. We don't vaccinate for flu either. We do west nile if the ministry has had birds reported in the area, but otherwise, that's it!

My girls get a 4-way and rabies.
But with horses dying here in Maine I will definitely vacinate for EEE next year
Two more horses die from EEE in Maine

In
AUGUSTA -- Two more horses in Maine have been confirmed with eastern equine encephalitis, bringing the tally to five. There are another two suspected cases in horses, as well.
So far, no humans have been infected with the potentially fatal brain infection in Maine, but health officials are warning residents to be vigilant in avoiding mosquito bites.
The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention is especially concerned about the geographic scope of the outbreak.
Last month, three horses were identified with EEE, two in Waldo County and one in Penobscot County.
The two horses confirmed this week were in Cumberland and Waldo counties. Two more cases involving horses in the Waldo County town of Unity and the York County town of Berwick are suspicious

Here in NC, we've always done the 5 or 6 way (including tetanus) shot in the spring only, and rabies one a year, no West Nile, no strangles. Depending on what part of VA you are in, you may want Potomac fever.

Thanks Everyone!!

You are close to me! I'm near Marshall, VA.

What vet are you using? I know Blue Ridge's vet will list everything you need.. they're super nice.
