Luvs, it's not illegal to slaughter for human consumption, it's illegal to sell horse meat for human consumption, because the meat hasn't gone through the USDA inspection process.

I can still slaughter for personal consumption, just like I can eat deer or have a personal cow, pig, chicken, etc. slaughtered for my own use.

For some reason people think because the funding was pulled, that means the consumption of horse meat by humans in the U.S. Is illegal. It's not.

I have a local slaughter house. If I took any of my horses there and said I wanted it processed and turned into chops, steaks, and ground meat, they'd do it. I just couldn't sell the meat to anyone.

Yes, some states have made it illegal to slaughter and eat equines, but the majority of the U.S. States have no such laws on the books.

Go back and re-read my post. You may have responded before I clarified myself. I said you could slaughter your horse for your own use, but slaughter for human consumption in comercial purposes or export is not legal.

I apologize, I was wrong in generalizing the way the horses are killed in mexico, but regardless I am a vegetarian, and do not believe any animal should be killed for my tastebuds. You don't have to agree with me, and I wont be offended, that's just how I feel and I would appreciate it if that was respected.

Then we're in agreement.

It's only not legal because they pulled the funding for the USDA inspectors, and the plants weren't willing to pay for private inspectors.

So it's kind of a Catch 22 situation. There are no USDA inspectors for the plants, so of course they can't slaughter and sell horse meat commercially.

It's a rather bass ackwards way of doing things, but it effectively got the foreign owners to close the plants and go somewhere more equine slaughter friendly.

Which may have been considered a 'victory' by the AR folks, but not by those of us who are horrified that the animals have to take much longer trips out of the country.

Cosmomomo, you're perfectly entitled to your opinions, and if you don't want to eat meat, that's your choice. I don't think any of us have a problem with that.

I'll respect your right not to eat it as long as you respect mine to eat it.

Actually, the USDA wouldn't allow private inspections for meat export. The plants tried to hire private inspections, but they got shot down, at least at the time.
