Hot Pack for Horses Back

My mare has a somewhat weak back [old injury]. The vet says she's fine to ride hard ect. but sometimes after a long trail ride or show day her back can get hot and slightly sore. She isn't lame or anything just after a long hard day of working her back can be warm and a little sore. I talked to my vet and he said to ice it for 10-15 minutes then fallow that with hot packs for another 10-15 minutes.
My mare usually stands for this but the ice and hot packs usually fall off, so I got to thinking. My mom is magnificent with a sewing machine and has made blankets for the horses before, if she put pockets along the back [where my mare needs them] of the blanket to put the ice and hot packs in would that work or is it a stupid idea?

If your vet said to do this & your mom can sew something up, go for it!
