How can I get Berdi used to her grazing muzzle?

To give a little background.... Berdi is my first horse and is 19 years old. She was given to me a couple of months ago and is a very easy keeper. When I saw her in the fall she was twice the size she is now! She gains weight very, very easy.

The pasture she is in has tons of lush spring grass and she is out there 24/7. Perfect recipe for founder - right?! I have no place to make a dry lot for her. It isn't my field - a neighbor lets me keep her there. I really don't want to stall her so I got her a grazing muzzle.

She was fine when I put it on. She is an easy going, very sweet mare and didn't fight at all. I pushed grass up through the hole to give her the idea and left in on for about half an hour. Next time I left it on one hour. I've put it on 3 times so far and she really isn't getting the idea too well. She slides it along the ground a few times and then walks to her shelter and mopes. I feel so sorry for her.

Any suggestions please?

Maybe just put it on her? I can't think of any other way of getting her used to it. If she really wants to eat the grass, she will figure it out. Im pretty sure that hole is so that they can drink anyway ;) just make sure you take it off the feed her, haha it wouldnt be to nice to starve her ;)

It will just take time. They never really like them...our halflinger runs like a toddler from a washcloth at his...he has eventually learned to graze a bit through it though.

Thanks for the advice! I guess she'll just have to figure it out. I put it on again this morning so hopefully she starts figuring it out.
