How do you pull stitches?

The trainer that I've been working for has this buckskin that was cryptorchid. He had the surgery about 2 weeks ago and they went threw his flank. The trainer had to go to Texas and I guess he must have forgot about the stitches. So he text me today and asked me if I could take the stitches out tonight when I go to ride because they are past due. That’s fine…but how the heck do you do that??

Is it as simple as just cutting next to the knot and pulling?

The gelding is hard to handle. He still thinks he is a stud so the quickest and easiest way possible would be great.

Thanks guys

Is it a running stitch or individual sutures? It's best to use a suture scissors so you do not inadvertently poke the horse in the sensitive scar area.

Snip close to the knot and pull the knot. With running suture, I snip each individual loop to lessen the pull on the tissue.

You will want to use suture scissors to take them out, otherwise it will be pretty difficult, if it is single stitches you will want to slight lift the stitch and then cut it on either side under the knot and it should pull right out, if it does not pull out with a gentle pull that means that you cut it in the wrong spot so you will try to cut it in a different spot

He said there is a pair of suture scissors at the barn so ill use those. I also made sure one of the boys that works at the barn will be there to help and hold onto him.

How long ago should they have come out? They have been in for 2 weeks.

I don't know about horses, but for dogs(i was a small animal vet tech) we would usually take them out at 10-14 days, so if it's the same as for horses they are not over due to come out, the longer they are in the harder they are to get out as the skin will sometimes start healing over the stitches, one time I took stitches out that had been in for over 4 months, boy was that fun lol
